3 Cancelled-Too-Soon TV Shows for Your Next Netflix Binge

1. Freaks and Geeks

netflix1

This Judd Apatow creation is a cult classic comedy from 1999. The show only lasted one season (18 episodes) and then it was tragically cancelled! The show was the start to many stellar careers. The cast was made up of some of your favorite actors including James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, and Martin Starr. Set in a high school in Michigan in the 1980’s, the show mixed comedy with high school drama seamlessly and was a truly incredible, however short-lived, series. Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Joe Flaherty, Becky Ann Baker, Busy Phillips, and Samm Levine round out the cast. (Available on Netflix)

2. Undeclared

netflix2

Another Judd Apatow creation that came after Freaks and Geeks, this comedy left high school behind and went straight into college. This show also only lasted one season with 17 episodes completing the series. The show focuses on a small group of college freshmen in the early 2000s (when the show first aired). The show starred Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, Charlie Hunnam, Carla Gallo, Monica Keena, Loudon Wainwright III, and Timm Sharp. Jason Segel, Kevin Hart, Amy Poehler, and Busy Phillips also make multiple appearances. Even the guest stars list is impressive. It includes Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Simon Helberg, Felicia Day, Martin Starr, Tom Welling, and Fred Willard to name a few. (Available on Netflix)

3. Arrested Development

netflix3

Arrested Development actually lasted 3 seasons in its original run before returning for a 4th and final season exclusively on Netflix on May 26, 2013, 7 years after the ending of its 3rd season. This comedy starred Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Wil Arnett, Michael Cera, Jessica Walter, David Cross, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, and Jeffrey Tambor. The cast makes up the dysfunctional, formerly wealthy Bluth family whose patriarch (played by Tambor) is in prison for fraud. His son, Michael (Jason Bateman) takes over the family business and, as a result, the family. The hilarious sitcom falls under the category known as “cinema verité” which is a documentary-similar style—think Modern Family, The Office, Parks and Recreation, etc. (Available on Netflix)

6 Thrifty Ways to Enjoy Summer Break

With May came graduations, the end of final exams, packing up, and moving on to the next chapter of this year: summer break. There is finally time to relax and spend time with family and friends, but as a college student or recent graduate, many of us are still on tight budgets. Here are some low cost (or free!) ways to enjoy this summer without breaking the bank.

1. Go to a public beach Beach_Public

If you live on a coast or by the Great Lakes, this can be a perfect option for you! Many beaches are free and have free parking for residents. You can also pack your own lunch and bring things to do such as a Frisbee or a volleyball.

Picnic2. Have a Picnic

If you don’t have any beaches nearby, find a park in your area and have a picnic. Bring a few friends and make it a potluck and you’ll cut costs even more.

Hiking3. Go Hiking

Take advantage of the sunshine and head out on a hiking trail in your area. The best part about it is it’s absolutely free! Spending time outdoors can really make you appreciate the beauty around you: no wifi required.

Museum4. Visit a Museum on a Free Day

During the summer months, many museums and aquariums have free days on the weekends. These places will usually advertise events such as these on their websites and in local newspapers.

Movies5. Go to the movies

When summer heat gets too intense, take advantage of air conditioning and catch a movie. After all, it’s time for summer blockbusters!

Concert6. Catch a Free Concert or Theatre Production

Keep an eye out for advertisements for local free concerts. Many parks and small theatres have shows for upcoming bands or community theatre productions. These ticket prices are usually very low (or free!) and you can support local artists at the same time. It’s a win-win!

5 Summer Music Festivals Your Friends Haven’t Heard Of

Everyone knows the big names in music festivals (think Bonnaroo, Coachella, Ultra, Sasquach etc.) but there are some great smaller music festivals that are sure to cure the festival fever without causing major wallet damage. Here are my picks for the top 5 little known music festivals.

5. Bunbury Festival – Cincinnati, OH July 12-14

This downtown festival has six stages and three days of performances. The headliners include Fun. MGMT, Sky Ferreira, Tegan and Sara,Yo La Tengo, The National, and Daniel Martin Moore. Although you may have to spring for a hotel for the weekend instead of camping, you will still come in under budget because this festival is only $120 for all three days.

4. Wakarusa – Ozark, AR May 30-June 2

If you are looking for an intense camping experience in one of the most beautiful locations look no further than Wakarusa. I would say that this particular festival isn’t for everyone. It has an attractive line up but be prepared to have a primitive camping experience and be surrounded by some modern day hippies where music and shows are a way of life not just a summer distraction. Notable acts include Grouplove, Snoop Lion, Zeds Dead, Baauer, Icona Pop, Araabmuzik, RJD2, Widespread Panic, and my personal favorite, Amon Tobin. Be warned you will be dirty, smelly, and sweaty at the end of this one. Watch the promo video and you’ll know what I mean.

3. Hard Summer 2013 – Los Angeles, CA August 3-4

If you live anywhere near LA you’ll want to attend this show. In the past this series has some of the most elite electronic acts including Deadmau5, A-Trak, Borgore, Crystal Castles, and Flying Lotus. The festival lineup isn’t out yet for this year but tickets for a 3 day pass are about $120. It is definetly a bang for your buck.

2. Summer Camp – Chillicothe, IL May 24-26

This is another small camping festival that landed some big names this year. The lineup includes Big Boi, Diplo, Zeds Dead, STS9, Theievery Corporation, 3 days of Moe, and 3 days of Umphreys’s McGee. It has 7 stages and over 75 artists and at $115 it is a no-brainier. Like other mid-west camping festivals you’ll wanna be prepared for limited showers, bugs, and heat. If you can stand the stress it’ll be worth it and at ¼ the cost of Bonnaroo.

1. Forecastle – Louisville, KY July 12-14

This will be the 11th forecastle festival, and in the past few years this festival has gained some major publicity mostly due to the unique structure and setting of the weekend festival. It is a true music and arts festival that includes speakers and art tutorials as well as music. The setting is also unique. There are 5 stages in downtown Louisville on the water front (one stage is even under an interstate overpass). The after parties are on the historic bell of Louisville and range from 15-35 dollars for late night shows. This festival has become a popular one so it may be your last year to enjoy it at the low $145 price point.

When so many good lineups are released in one year it can be tempting to clean out your savings account on tickets, but it is important to look around at your options before committing to the priciest summer fest. Are there any we missed?

Spring Activities to Enjoy

Alright, it’s officially springtime! In many places, it even feels like summer already. Because of this recent wave of hot weather, everyone should get outside and soak up some vitamin D! Here are a few ideas of things to do in this beautiful sunshine.

My first thought this spring was to go to baseball games! Nothing is more relaxing than cheering on your schools baseball team on a beautiful day. Not only will you get naturally tan by sitting at a game for three hours, you will have fun as well. Also, baseball games offer a lot of really good food. I love ballpark hotdogs and brats. Get out there and support your school’s ball team.

Another idea for this hot weather is a grill out. If your school doesn’t have grills on campus, try a local park or camp ground. The old fashioned way is fun with a bonfire and a stick too if you can find somewhere to do it. Once the grill gets going it officially smells like summer. Enjoy a night on the patio or out at the park with your closest friends.

Recently, my friends have started to have a lot of fun playing sand volleyball. If your school doesn’t have a sand volleyball court, try setting up a net in a park or open area. Volleyball is great because it gets you active, allows you to soak up some rays, and it can get competitive. Bring along an Ihome or radio if possible, it adds to the atmosphere. Other ideas for getting competitive could include a pick-up game of softball, football, or even Frisbee.

For you music lovers, check out what concerts are coming to your area. Once the weather gets nice, there are always festivals and fairs which also include performers! Although they might not be performing until it’s officially summer, it’d be a good idea to get tickets now. Not only will you for sure get in the door if you buy tickets early, but you will have more time to make a homemade t-shirt for the show! ☺

If you enjoy the outdoors, find a local river or lake where public fishing is allowed. Some of my friends and I enjoy fishing on nice days. Fishing is especially fun when you take a couple close friends along, and a picnic basket or cooler. Try packing some homemade treats or trail mix to enjoy while you fish. If you turn it into an all-day event, it can be very rewarding. You might just have free food for a few days!

If your city has a nice downtown or shopping center, try shopping there instead of the mall. On nice days, it’s fun to be able to walk outside between stores. When you need a bite to eat, try a restaurant with outdoor seating, the overall atmosphere is awesome, especially downtown. Sometimes popular downtowns such as these even include street performers, which are always fun to watch.

This spring, try to get out as much as possible and enjoy this extra warm weather. It’s been unusually warm so far which means we can start our summer fun early!
